"Adding Situator to the security and operations program at Oslo Airport has enabled us to confidently build a true best-of-breed solution. The capabilities provide a common operating picture for all stakeholders, improving security and operations.” Jan Terje By, CEO Racom AS (system integrator at Oslo Airport)
Due to an increasing number of passengers, Oslo Airport expanded into a new terminal, which opened in 2017. As part of this expansion, the airport upgraded its security, safety and operations.
One of the requirements Avinor, the group responsible for managing Norway’s airports, had for the upgraded security solution was the creation of a unified platform that could be managed centrally. It needed to be able to integrate with any existing or future systems and sensors, including those from third parties. This would allow it to build a best-of-breed solution to fit its specific needs. Other criteria included compliance support and real-time situational awareness and management, as well as improved adherence to defined SOPs.
Avinor and Oslo Airport are very familiar with Hexagon technology. They’ve been using its video management solution to secure the airport since 2008. Upgrading and expanding with Situator, Hexagon’s advanced incident management solution, was an informed decision. Situator integrates the Qognify VMS video management solution with video analytics to manage over 2,000 video channels across the airport. In addition, existing third-party systems including access control and Flexigate have also been integrated.
The airport achieved its main priority – improved security and safety – via the enhanced situational awareness and management capabilities provided by Situator.
Additional benefits range from a more efficient control room with a unified, centralized platform, to improved operations, thanks to the automation of the management of routine, but critical, tasks.
▪ Flexigate access control: Oslo Airport serves many Schengen flights, meaning flights to the 26 European countries that have officially abolished passports and all other types of border control for intra-European travel. Allowing the area to function as a single country for international travel purposes dictates special operational requirements using the advanced Flexigate system.
The Flexigate system avoids incidents where the wrong doors are opened to ensure passengers who should go through border control actually do so. Situator integrates with the advanced Flexigate access control system and overrides switching of gates between Schengen and non-Schengen flights, as well as domestic flights if control systems are not operational.
▪ Automated, escalating guided workflows: To ensure every response is carried out according to the Oslo Airport’s approved SOPs, enabling improved outcomes and business continuity.
Situator has also allowed the airport to leverage its existing technology and extend the capabilities of those systems for increased value. It has given Avinor the ability to smartly and cost-effectively upgrade the airport’s security without having to replace previous, viable investments. Moreover, Situator is enabling the airport to maintain compliance as it is able to proactively ensure compliant responses and actions through situation and operational management capabilities.
